Age: 13
Canon: Yuusha De Aru
Canon Point: After the final battle in season one
Character Information: Wiki.
Personality:
In a group full of people it’s fairly easy to find Yuuna. She’s usually the loudest person in the room, laughing or just speaking loudly. She’s the sort of person who eagerly announces their presence when arriving somewhere at the top of her lungs. When Yuuna’s in a group she can’t just sit quietly. She might when it’s socially called for but she always seems to be the one who draws attention to themselves whether she intends to or not. When things seem to be going south, Yuuna’s the one who tries to break the tension. She might suddenly tickle someone to get their minds off of what’s troubling them or make a joke at her own expense. If it’s for the group, she doesn’t seem to mind taking a fall or two.
Yuuna’s outgoing personality shines when new people come into her life. It could be a new neighbor or a new member of the Hero Club, it doesn’t matter. She puts her all into trying to figure out how she can make them fit in. It could be as complex as trying to plan out a surprise birthday party or as simple as giving them a four-leaf clover keychain for good luck. If she’s decided that you’re part of her friend group then it’ll be nearly impossible to change her mind about you.
The thing is, Yuuna’s someone who thrives best when other people are happy. She admits it herself: she doesn’t like it when people around her are in pain or suffering. To that end she’s always trying to help. It could be picking up litter or trying to talk her friends into speaking their feelings to her.
It doesn’t seem to matter to Yuuna if she gets hurt in this aspect, either. How she first transformed into a Hero is a perfect example. She had two choices: run so she could live but let her best friend die or become a Hero to protect her despite the risks to her own self. The answer was easy for her to pick. She’d let herself get hurt over her friends any day of the week. Sometimes this means she might promise things that she doesn’t know how to do (such as finding a cure for the Sange) or are down-right impossible to achieve (staying with someone forever). It might be easy to throw these off as just lip service but for Yuuna, these promises are sacred. They’re true because she says them with her full heart and mind.
Even when she breaks her promises, it’s clear she still meant them by her sure contrition. She takes it as a personal failing. It could be due to some extraordinary circumstance or just that she didn’t have all the information but Yuuna still takes it personally. For example, she takes it very personally that her promise of protecting Togo via trying to figure out how to fix the Sange ends up with Togo deciding that the world isn’t worth protecting if it only leads to suffering.
Yuuna’s devotion often bleeds in with her ultimate goal: to become a Hero. She’s always talking about the five tenets of the Hero Club as if they’re gospel. She quotes them constantly to herself and others, usually the ones about not giving up and you can usually succeed if you try. This leads to ultimately a steadfast belief about Heroes. I’m not just talking about Heroes chosen by the Shinju either, mind you. While being chosen by the Shinju pushed this into the forefront Yuuna’s idealism was already there. She’ll admit it herself that she likes the word ‘hero’.
To Yuuna, Heroes protect the world first. If you don’t protect it then you can’t be with your friends. Period. Things might get rough but if you keep striving you’ll achieve them. To this end, she butts heads a lot with other people when it turns out the world isn’t as pure as it once seemed. While it hurts Yuuna to learn that the fight isn’t as black and white as it seemed, she still holds fast to her ideals.
She constantly comes back to the ideals of the Hero Club and of being a Hero. She doesn’t put the blame of her situation on anyone but herself. Yuuna chose this path so there’s no point in saying that she was deceived by either Fuu or the Taisha. Saying that the blame lies with others doesn’t feel right to her in spite of the fact that it could be easy to do so. Even if the world is still in danger, that just means that she needs to continue fighting.
Part of this is because of Yuuna’s immense courage. She certainly can get scared: she sometimes trembles despite saying brave words, for example. Yuuna doesn’t let this stop her for the most part, though. When she says she’s willing to do anything to make sure others are safe she means anything. It could be punching the sun, it could mean diving into a black hole, or it could even mean punching her best friend in the face. Once she resolves herself to do something she’ll do it.
When others are frozen in fear she forces herself forward. If she has to be reckless to be brave then so be it. A Hero never gives up so she’ll never give up. She might be reluctant to do it or make up an excuse for her actions then so be it. Even if the consequences of her actions are things that she doesn’t want, that's just a problem for the future.
That’s the thing about Yuuna. She’s brave but she’s also impulsive. A lot of her decisions are quick and on the fly. She certainly can plan for the future but her most impactful actions are ones that are made quickly. She will dive right into a fight when no one else will. She’ll even start a fight in the middle of a puppet show if it means that the show will continue.
The problem is that, even if the decision is made on the fly or if she thought long and hard about it, she won’t swerve from her path. If Yuuna Yuuki decides something she will stick to it for as long as she can. This stubbornness is both a gift and a hindrance. On the good side of things it helps her continue to see things through. If she wants to climb a mountain then she will climb it even if her legs go out.
Yet this also means it’s extremely difficult to change her mind. Climbing that metaphorical mountain might be a good goal but if she nearly kills herself doing it, is it worth it? To Yuuna? It absolutely is. Why? Because she said she’d climb it. Going back on her word would make her a bad person. Even if she ends up berating herself to climb it, she still will.
Yuuna, for all her energy and seemingly transparency, rarely actually takes the time to talk about herself. It can seem like a one-way street with her at times. While she might not be able to hide what she’s feeling she normally doesn’t explain what she’s feeling even when directly asked. She’d rather say she’s okay than admit she’s frightened, smile rather than admit she’s hurt. Part of it is that she doesn’t want to worry others with her inner thoughts–if something only bothers her it’s easier for everyone if she just pushes through and doesn’t say anything. If she’s the only one who can’t taste an expensive meal then no one else can enjoy it, so it’s better to just power through.
Another part is that the ideals she’s put on herself don’t allow her to admit when she’s upset. Yes, one of the Hero Club tenets is that if you’re troubled is to go and talk to someone but Yuuna rarely initiates it when the troubles concern herself. When she realizes that she’s lost her sense of taste or when she’s upset that Togo turned against the Shinju it’s other people who bring it up first. Why? When push comes to shove, Yuuna desperately wants to be a Hero and Heroes are meant to put themselves second.
This comes out even more so in the second season. While she’s incapable of talking about the details of the curse due to the curse itself, Yuuna doesn’t admit she’s frightened. She doesn’t admit that she’s dying. She refuses to let others in, partially because she knows that her friends would get hurt but also she felt that doing so would be selfish. Even if this isolation made her despair she wouldn’t admit it because simply put, Heroes aren’t allowed to be afraid.
In the end, Yuuna is a girl who just wants to be a hero. She wants to help others and for the most part? She succeeds due to her kind nature and her courage but that's also a double-edged sword. She cares about getting hurt yet refuses to admit it. The same strength of will that lets her be so brave also makes her someone who rarely changes her mind. Her ideals are strong, too, but that also means that she can't allow herself to fall short of them. If she does? Well, she allowed herself to. That's all there is to it.

[The fact that it’s winter in Ryslig didn’t go unnoticed by Yuuna. The coldness of the season, the snow on the ground, the fact that even the plants are hiding… Well, that was fitting, wasn’t it? She might have been healed in this strange place but the ones she held dear… In her heart, Yuuna knew the fight was over but what happened afterwards? That gnawed at her. Even as others told her about the fate of all in Ryslig it was that question that hurt more.
That’s why she took to the streets tonight, her breath showing up as she breathed. It was a sign that Yuuna’s still alive. The buildings, the streets, and even the cold biting her lungs proved her vitality. She might have been the only one here but that proof was there.
As her feet move forward to some aimless goal–someone said that the park was pretty at night, maybe that’ll be a good place to go. She didn’t really know. Fingernails dig into her palms as she walks. She couldn’t break now.
Yuuna lifts a hand to catch a flake on her open palm, ignoring the brief sting.]
It’s so pretty…
[Even in a ruthless place that created monsters there were moments like this. Moments worth protecting. That’s what it meant to be a Hero: these small moments needed to be protected. She breathes in deeply.
Her friends aren’t here. That’s true. Togo wasn’t here, either, and that meant she broke her promise. Yuuna had lied when she said they wouldn’t be apart. Her shoulders raise instinctively as she thinks about it. She lied. She broke her promise.
She wouldn’t cry. No, she couldn’t cry. Even if her heart was screaming she needed to be strong.]
Hero Club Tenet Number Two: Try not to give up!
[Her words are quiet as she stops. How many times has Yuuna repeated those simple words to herself before? Quite a lot, she thinks. It’s true, though. She’s still a Hero Club member. She wouldn’t give up. She wouldn’t cry.
She turns her face upwards, blinking back tears as the cold flakes land on her eyelids.]
I’m not giving up! [Her voice is still quiet but firm. She forces herself to punch at the air.] Do you hear that? I’ll make sure everyone can enjoy this snow!
[Did she know how to do that? Not at all but it didn’t matter. It didn’t even matter if no one else but Yuuna heard it. As long as she didn’t give up things would be fine. She’d make them work out! She couldn't help but give a shiver, though, as the wind cuts through her clothes.]
Maybe I should get a heavier coat first, oops...
